Professor Peter Davies, Advisor to SRPe Board
Professor Peter Davies is Emeritus Professor of Fluid Dynamics at the University of Dundee. He studied at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, graduating with a First Class BSc Honours degree in Physics and Mathematics (1966), DipEd (1967) and PhD (1971).
He was awarded a 2-year Postdoctoral Fellowship by the Royal Society of London (tenable 1971-73 at the International Meteorological Institute, University of Stockholm, Sweden), and then spent 7 years as a Senior Research Associate at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
In 1980 he moved to a Lectureship in Fluid Mechanics in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Dundee and was awarded a Personal Chair in Fluid Dynamics in 1995, the same year that he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
He was elected a Foreign Member of the Norwegian Academy of Science & Letters in 2009 and was awarded the Lord Kelvin Medal of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2013. Honorary Membership of the International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research (IAHR) was conferred on him by the IAHR Council in 2021. Between 2006 and 2020 he served as Chair of the International Advisory Board for the EU HYDRALAB Programmes.
His main research areas lie in environmental, geophysical and physical fluid dynamics.
Peter served as Director of The National Telford Institute from 2008 to 2018, Director of the Northern Research Partnership in Engineering (NRPe) from 2010 to 2012, and NRPe Director on the SRPe Board from 2014 to 2020.
