Opening of the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS)
21st Sept 2023 marked the official opening of the new flagship National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) building in the heart of the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland.
SRPe were represented by Executive Director Claire Ordoyno and SRPe Advanced Manufacturing Theme Chair Professor Bill Ion.
Delegates heard inspirational speeches from Chris Courtney, First Minister Humza Yousaf, NMIS Chair and Principal of the University of Strathclyde Sir Jim McDonald, High Value Manufacturing Catapult CEO Katherine Bennett CBE and Scottish Enterprise Chief Executive Adrian Gillespie.
“Magnetise” was a word which was mentioned throughout the speeches, referring to the capability of NMIS to attract industry, academia, and the public sector to work together to advance innovation in manufacturing, as well as attracting inward investment to Scotland.
Delegates were then treated to a tour of the building and were able to explore the range of innovative technologies housed at the NMIS the Digital Factory. Claire even had a go at using the green screen, used to develop interactive training.
The NMIS HQ is packed with sustainable design features, including solar panels and rainwater harvesting (just to cover all weather bases) and is fully carbon neutral in operation. There’s even a tree inside the reception area!
SRPe work closely with the NMIS team, in particular through our Industry Doctorate Programme and our Advanced Manufacturing Thematic Leadership Group, and we look forward to continuing the collaboration.
